PERKii - A Queensland drink that's good for your gut from the inside out

Improving gut health by delivering probiotics directly to the digestive system is just one of the benefits of PERKii, a unique beverage that has harnessed the technology of Progel in a world-first invention developed right here in Queensland.

Progel ensures over one billion live probiotics can travel through the acidic environment of the stomach, and make their way to the intestine where the probiotics do their best work.

The process of creating Microgels (Progel™ technology)—tiny natural beads that encapsulate the probiotics—on a commercial scale was developed by scientists at The University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane.

The invention from UQ's School of Agriculture and Food Sciences has been used to demonstrate that different active ingredients can be microencapsulated using Progel, including the friendly living bacteria in probiotics, therapeutic biologics and drugs, and fish oils.

PERKii is the only probiotic product using this world-first technology in a drink that uses 85% water, natural flavours and juice.

PERKii CEO, Randy Milne

When talking about PERKii, CEO Randy Milne noted his desire to ensure consumers had access to a very low-sugar beverage that was tasty as well.

"We have made a drink that tastes amazing, has extremely low sugar (from apples), only 26 calories and contains one billion probiotics that will get delivered directly to the gut," said Mr Milne.

Since August 2015 PERKii has gone through a trial period in a number of outlets around Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast and has created a loyal group of ever-growing stockists.

The success of this trial has also attracted national attention from retailers, and from early April PERKii will be available right across Australia.

Bevco, located in Mudgee, New South Wales, will be overseeing production and ensuring the goodness of PERKii's one billion live probiotics is delivered to consumers.

The geographic location of the Bevco production facility will aid the distribution of PERKii across Australia.

"Our production partnership with Bevco is such a positive one, and I know it will continue to be this way as we work together to ensure PERKii is available to our growing customer market on a national scale," Mr Milne said.
